Lost Keys – this is something that locksmiths come across on a daily basis, and something that you are likely to experience at least once in your life. When you have lost your keys, your main priority tends to be on getting back into your property, however, what you also need to be thinking about is changing the locks. This is because your lost keys could now be in the wrong hands! The last thing you want is a burglar breaking into your home with your own set of house keys!
Previous Occupants – Whether you have just moved house or been in your house a while but never had the locks changed then you should seriously consider getting them done. You can never be sure that all keys from previous occupants have been handed back and passed on to you. So, changing the locks when you move home is always advised to prevent previous occupants letting themselves into your home at any given time.
Attempted Break-In or Break-In – This is a sure sign that your locks need changing, your locks may have become damaged and no longer fit for purpose to properly secure your property after a break-in, and if a break-in was attempted it is a sign that your locks needed and upgrade anyway as the burglar seen your property as an easy target! Also, in the event of a break-in a burglar may have found a spare set of keys to your property and is saving them to use at a later date. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and get the locks changed after a break-in or attempted break-in.
Old Locks – Old locks, much like anything else, are susceptible to wear and tear which can cause them to become stiff, difficult, and eventually break. When a problem first presents itself with any lock you should contact a locksmith to either repair or replace the lock before more serious problems occur and you end up locked out or locked in your property and in need of an emergency locksmith. Also, any old locks may not be the most secure available, locks and the level of security they provide are constantly improving, the current minimum standard for locks in the UK are BS3621 and TS007 for uPVC door locks. If your current locks don’t meet or exceed this current British Standard, then you should contact your local locksmith to come and upgrade them as it could be leaving your property vulnerable to a burglary.
